Pretty solid sushi rolls. Felt like what you'd expect at the price. The fish was pretty fresh and the portions were decent but on the lighter side. The chef's special tasted like a dragon roll you'd find elsewhere but with extra flair. It came with tempura shrimp, cucumber, lobster salad, avocado, fish roe, and extra goodies I can't remember. I enjoyed the sweet and crunchy taste and texture. Definitely would get again. I thought the double red was decent but not amazing. The tuna was good but the seared fish on top tasted a little mushy. The avocado and fish roe were good. The service was good and attentive. The interior was pretty nice with Japanese decor. Little on the smaller side but not too busy near closing time.
Great experience with fresh delicious food and good service. We were in Hayes in dinner time and decided to give this place a try. We were seated right away without reservation, which is luck on a Sunday evening. We ordered Snow dragon, Spicy summer, Double red, and Nasu roll. I liked all of them but my favorite was Double red. Our server, Uncle Ben, was extremely attentive, which added to the experience. Extra ginger, water refill and even complimentary sweet treat at the end - made that dinner memorable. The place was cozy with lights dimmed, and calm guests. I'll definitely come there again.
New fave sushi place in SF hands down!!! This place was amazing because of the food but also the service!! We ate the sashimi platter 20 pieces, and the variety was stunning. Each sashimi was seasoned in its own unique way, and they all melted in my mouth. We also ordered a 49er special roll that tasted super refreshing and delicious!! On top of it all, Benjamin (he told us to call him Uncle Ben :)) ) was attentive, considerate, and so sweet!! He explained every fish and its origins in such great detail, cracked a few jokes, and quickly said "okay i'll be invisible now, but I'm here if you need me" and backed away to give us space. At the end of the meal, he asked if it was our first time. When we said yes, he said he had a surprise for us and got us two shots of sake and some organic strawberries with cream! On the house!!! They were so so good and the perfect cherry on top after a great meal. SF has a lot of pretty great sushi places, but my experience here definitely stood out.
After having been to some local favorites, Nakama sushi is by far my favorite sushi restaurant in San Francisco. I have been here with groups of friends and for dates, and they never disappoint. First of all, the service is far and above the best food service I have ever experienced. The chefs and servers will remember you, and they're extremely attentive and friendly. They give great recommendations, and if you choose to get a "chefs special" sushi roll he will not let you down. That brings me to their food, which first of all is objectively some of the best sushi I've had, I'd rather have Nakama rolls than Nobu. And their prices are very reasonable -- I've paid much more for much worse sushi. I really would recommend the chefs choice roll, both times I've got it it's been so good and more than worth its price. I could not recommend this restaurant enough and I'm shocked that they don't have thousands of reviews with a perfect 5 star rating
Delightful surprise we had a reservation at before the ballet. Amazing service and excellent sushi and sake. 4.5 stars Food: 4.5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4 Cost to worth it rating: 4 Opentableable: yes Return worthiness: yes Highlights: - Waiter: he was super fantastic. So friendly and willing to offer advice about food or drink items. Didn't pressure us to order more, asked about our show to ensure we were out in time, and helped us choose the right sake being relative newbies. He really made the experience. - Dragon roll: one of the best I've had. Unagi was perfect, tempura was freshly made with delicious shrimp, and no mayo-y filler. 5 stars - Hotate: good size that and pure flavor that melted in my mouth. 5 stars - Albacore belly: thinly sliced with fatty marbling and glazed with a small amount of soy. 4.5 stars - Bacon wrapped scallop skewer: wanted a wee bit more and 2 good sized scallops with bacon recommended by our stellar waiter did the trick. 4 stars - Sake: good selection with descriptions on the menu and we were able to try a taste to decide which one to get. Smooth and not too strong. Little blue and white glass carafe was adorable paired with the artsy tiny glasses. - Location: only a few minutes walk from the ballet/orchestra and around the corner from the Van ness Muni station. - Atmosphere: small restaurant with a few tables and the sushi bar--felt comfortable and homey - Pricing: reasonable--especially for the quality of the items. Lowlights: - No bento type items so have to come with a fellow sushi fan as I can't bring my katsu eating boys here. - Didn't get to try more items: some of the other hot appetizers like the miso sea bass and crab chawanmushi looks great. Loved my dinner here with my girlfriend and would love to return.
Found this little gem randomly, and SO glad to have discovered it! From the minute we walked in, we were so pleasantly surprised. The service was above and beyond, and the decor was beautiful with a nice, delicate aroma. The food was just exquisite. The fish was so fresh, with the perfect ratio of rice to fish in our nigiri and sushi rolls. The unique things we tried were the salmon tasting (5 different cuts/types of salmon), which was really great, and the zucchini skewers, which were the only thing in the restaurant that wasn't absolutely amazing. Our favorites were the sake toro and the o-toro nigiri. Overall, we completely loved this place. Cannot wait to go back!
Nakama sushi is a place my father in law has been going for years and I had not yet made it to because of just how many sushi options there are in the city; I'm so glad I changed that and got to eat there recently. We stuck to almost exclusively Nigiri along with seaweed salad, miso soup, and some sake. I have to say that every single bite was truly wonderful. The fish was fresh and full of flavor at a reasonable price point for the quality. We actually wanted to order a second round but they only had one waiter working and that part didn't work out. I hope to make it back soon on a less busy or more well staffed night and eat my body weight in delicious nigiri.
My absolute favorite sushi place in the city. They have the best tasting and best quality fish. My favorite dish is the soy marinated tuna but honestly every single thing on this menu is amazing. The service is outstanding every single time we go. I cannot recommend this place enough.
I don't ordinarily begin reviews by highlighting the ambiance, but then again, Nakama is no ordinary restaurant The quality begins the moment you walk in the door. It has an incredibly welcoming atmosphere; the interior decorated in warm woods, complimented by modern fixtures that allow it to walk a perfect line between elegant and cozy. It exudes calm and warmth, a welcome reprieve from the cold and at times unforgiving streets of the city outside. Thankfully the positives don't stop at the ambiance, and Nakama delivers excellent food and kind, attentive service as well. Of particular interest to me was the Salmon Tasting, an option I've yet to see at any other Japanese restaurants that includes four different cuts of high-quality salmon sashimi along with the best Ikura, or salmon roe, that I've probably ever had. I can never skip trying the fried and grilled foods at Japanese restaurants, and both the Agedashi and Eggplant Skewers were delicious and provided a valuable contrast to the fresh sushi dishes. San Francisco is a city with no lack of Japanese and sushi restaurants, but Nakama rises above the fray and I hope I have the opportunity to go back soon.
More like a 3.5 since it was nothing special but rounded up to 4 because service was amazing. The fish was fresh, but a little pricey as the rolls were a little small. My favorite was the chef special which came with two types of white fish. I think the element of surprise added to the uniqueness. The best part was that there was unlimited ginger here AND the ginger they use is real pickled ginger.
